UPDATE:

*** We have a locale: Check the map It is about 5 minute walk north from Greenwood station on the east side. Yes it is not downtown but hey, when Coca Cola doesn't want you to see it, we have to go with what we got. Also for those wondering, it is going to take place in an auditorium, not a room. ***

Also two other movie meetups will be joining us for this event as they read it from our posting and contacted me stating that they would be interested to come with us. Please BE THERE between 7:00pm and 7:10pm SHARP gang. Doing movies can be tricky as I have to wait for everyone to come in. So the sooner people are there, the better the chances of getting in as a group. If you come late, you will seat by yourself. Don't be an isolationist, come early! We will meet at the front of the school, we we can chat for a few minutes before we go in. Possibly in line.

After the event, we are going to a nearby venue for mingling and discussion. We can walk there from the movie and it is about a 6 minute walk. I will ask the group to see how many are up to it!

See you all there,

Hola a todos,

Many of you may not have heard of this but in Colombia, Coca Cola, yes, Coca Cola Corp. the poster child of Americana business has been hit with allegations of hiring paramilitary forces with the goal of dispersing unions, specifically in Colombia. What that means is, that 9 people - all union workers-- have been murdered plus in January 2004, a New York City-based fact-finding delegation, a self-initiated group that included some city officials in a personal capacity confirmed the workers' allegations which included 179 human rights violations.

The movie is of course in Spanish with some English along with English subtitles for those who may need them. Would you like to see the trailer? Check here or scroll to the bottom. After the movie we can have a chat & drink, in Spanish of course, as follow up.

I will post more details in the next couple of weeks as right now, Coca Cola lawyers has sent the venue where we might watch this documentary a letter stating they are breaking the law by showing us this film. (For real??) So, this IS the film that Coca Cola does not want you to see.

Los veo a todos pronto!

Film Synopsis

Colombia is the trade union murder capital of the world. Since 2002, more than 470 workers’ leaders have been brutally killed, usually by paramilitaries hired by private companies intent on crushing the unions. Among these unscrupulous corporate brands is the poster boy for American business: Coca-Cola.

Talk to Martin Gil: His brother Isidro was killed at point-blank range while working at the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Carepa, because he was part of a union bargaining unit. Like most violent crimes committed against Colombian union leaders, Gil’s murder went unpunished.
However, U.S. lawyers Daniel Kovalik and Terry Collingsworth, as well as activist Ray Rogers, stepped in and launched an ambitious crusade against the behemoth Coca-Cola. In an incredible three-year saga, filmmakers Germán Gutiérrez and Carmen Garcia follow these heroes in a legal game of cat and mouse. From Bogotá to New York, Guatemala to Atlanta, Washington to Canada, The Coca-Cola Case maintains the suspense of a hard-fought struggle.

The lawyers filed several cases at the U.S. federal court against Cola-Cola for murder, abduction and torture committed in Colombia and Guatemala. Thanks to activist Ray Rogers, they also attacked the brand image of the Atlanta-based giant, with the devastating campaign Stop Killer Coke!, causing dozens of U.S. colleges and universities to boycott the drink.
Still the company would not give up. After five years of haggling, will the lawyers get justice? In the end, they reach a settlement of sorts, but what will the victims choose - cash, or power and integrity?
